Updates and versions
What the version number means, where to read what changed, and the dot in the sidebar.
On this page
In short
- The number near the foot of the sidebar is the build of Vallit you are using. Clicking it opens What’s new, the newest releases in a popup.
- The update log lists every release that changes something for you, newest first, with what was added, improved and fixed. It needs no account.
- A dot on the version button means this browser has not looked at the updates since the build changed.
Where in the app
In the app, the version number near the foot of the sidebar opens What’s new, and the whole log opens from there. Without an account, read the log at vallit.net/updates.
Step by step
Find the version you are on
The last row at the foot of the sidebar, just above your name, shows the word Vallit and a number. That number is your build. A blue dot on its tag icon means the build changed since this browser last looked at the updates.
Open What’s new
Click the version. What’s new opens with the newest releases, each with its first changes, and this browser counts the updates as read until the build changes.
Open the whole log
Click the expand button beside the popup’s title. Pointing at it shows its name, All updates. When the popup has no releases to list, an All updates link takes its place. Updates opens inside the app. Click an entry in the popup to jump to it in the log. Escape closes the popup.
Open a big update in full
A big update carries the label Big update. In the popup, one with a page of its own ends in Open in full. In the log, click Open the full update. Either way, its page opens inside the app.
Find your build
The entry marked Current is the build you are on. When that build only changed our own tools, no entry carries the mark. Each entry starts with its version number and the date it shipped.
Read what changed
Each entry lists its changes under Added, Improved and Fixed, one per bullet: the change on the first line, what exactly changed beneath it. On a wide screen, the Versions list beside the log jumps to any release.
What happens behind the scenes
The version number has three parts: major, release and change.
- The last number counts every change and never resets. Most releases move only this number. A change to our own tools counts too but is not listed, so the log skips some numbers.
- The middle number moves only for a big update. Big updates are set apart in the popup and the log. Some have a page of their own, such as
app.vallit.net/updates/1.13for Follow the request andapp.vallit.net/updates/1.15for The whole perimeter. A page may open on a picture that fills the screen, with the title and numbered links to its sections. Inside the app the picture sits in a card beside the sidebar. The same picture is what a shared link shows. On a phone, the card under the map names the check it answers. Until 1.14.62 the middle number moved for every release. - The first number moves only for a major release, marked Major release in the log. None has shipped since 1.0.
The 1.13 map preserves the checks that belonged to that release and leaves out later additions. The 1.15 map includes checks added by later changes in the same release. Its repository station includes the deployment and build checks, which read your committed configuration. Their presence on the map does not establish that they ran against your app.
The log is built from the release notes that ship with each build, so a new entry appears when that build goes live. app.vallit.net/updates shows the same log without an account. vallit.net/updates reads it from there and can take up to an hour to show a new release.
The dot is remembered in your browser, not in your account. Opening the popup, or the log on app.vallit.net, clears it in that browser only, so another browser or device shows its own dot. If your browser blocks site storage, no dot appears. With the sidebar collapsed, the version button is hidden.
Vallit's checks announce the first two parts of the number in their user agent, as VallitBot/<major>.<release>. Your server logs show which release checked your app, and the update log says what that release changed.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| There is nothing here | You opened an address under app.vallit.net/updates/ that has no page, such as a release without a page of its own. | Click All updates to go back to the log. |
| There is nothing here | In the app, an address under /app/updates/ has no page. The line under the title reads It may belong to a company you are not part of. | Click Back to overview, then open the log from the version in the sidebar. |
| That did not load | The update log inside the app failed to load on our side. | Click Try again. If it keeps happening, tell us the reference the page shows. |
If What’s new opens with only an All updates link, the list of releases could not load into the popup, for example because the connection dropped. Click All updates to open the whole log. The popup asks for the list again the next time you open it.
