Plans and billing

What a plan buys, invoices, and the billing portal.

Needs an accountUpdated

In short

  • A plan is bought per app. Each app goes on Free, Watch or Care. Watch watches an app every five minutes once its domain is confirmed. Care does the same, and a person at Vallit works on every confirmed finding, with no monthly limit. A job over two hours we agree with you first.
  • An app on Free keeps its daily check and nothing more. Beside a plan, up to 10 apps can stay on Free. Without a plan, you are on the free check.
  • A plan belongs to a company. Any member can see the billing page. Only a company admin can start, change or cancel the plan.
  • Before an order goes to Stripe, you tick a box: you order for a business and accept the Terms and the Data Processing Agreement in the version it names. Terms accepted under Your account shows which version, when and by whom.
  • Payment runs through Stripe. You change the card, cancel and read old invoices in Stripe's billing portal.

What each plan includes

Prices are per app and final; the checkout adds nothing on top. Vallit is a small business under § 19 UStG and charges no VAT, so invoices show none.

A year costs ten months. From ten paid apps in a company, Watch and Care counted together, every paid app costs the lower price: Watch €19 and Care €69 a month. Apps on Free do not count towards the ten and cost nothing. All paid apps share one billing period, monthly or yearly.

A first Watch plan starts with 14 days free. Stripe takes the card at the start and charges it when the 14 days end, unless you cancel before. An order with a Care app starts paid, and a company that had a plan before gets no second trial.

The row Checks you start, a month counts the checks you start. The guardian's own checks do not count, and the count starts again on the first of each month.

Reading your code is part of Watch and Care, per app: the free check and apps on Free are looked at from the outside only. On Watch or Care, connect the repository behind an app and every check also reads it. See Connect your code.

Every app is checked daily, whatever its plan. The five-minute watch is the close watch. Once the domain of an app on Watch or Care is confirmed, it is checked every five minutes and you are told when it breaks. See Confirm your domain.

On Care, a person at Vallit works on every finding our checks find and confirm, with no monthly number. Critical findings get an answer by 18:00 Berlin time on the next business day. A single job we expect to take over two hours we agree with you before we start. On Watch, on Free and on the free check, one finding can be fixed for €99 on its own, with Fix it for €99 on the finding. It arrives within two business days, and the time stands still while we wait for something from you. Fixing what we found shows how.

Where in the app

Billing opens from Billing at the foot of the sidebar. The Company card on Home leads here too, with Choose a plan or Change plan. Right after sign-up, a page of its own asks the same question once: it lays the free check beside the same order, and Continue free opens your first app.

The Billing page of a company with one app on Care, one on Watch and one on Free: the plan's state, apps and renewal date under the title (1), the apps in the Free, Watch and Care lanes (2), Compare plans under the apps (3), monthly or yearly with twelve months below (4), the receipt with what is charged today (5), and your apps, checks, the Terms you accepted and fixes under Your account (6).

Step by step

  1. Open the billing page

In the sidebar, click Billing. On a plan, the line under the title names its state, such as Active, Trial or Ending, the apps on each plan, the price and the renewal date. Without a plan, the page opens on Start with 14 days free. and fourteen days drawn as blocks.

  2. Put each app on a plan

Under A plan for each app, every app of your company sits in one of three lanes: Free, Watch or Care. Click another lane in the app's row to move it there. The lane heads give the price per app. Beside a plan, up to 10 apps can stay on Free.

  3. Compare the plans

Click Compare plans under your apps. One row per feature opens in the lanes: how often we check, which checks run, alerts, the trust page and fixes, with a value, a tick or a dash under Free, Watch and Care. Click it again to fold the rows away.

  4. Add places for apps you add later

Click Places for apps you add later, then set Watch places and Care places with the minus and plus buttons, or type the number. The next apps you add take these places. Only whole numbers count: a minus sign or a decimal leaves the last number in place and says why under the field. When Choose a plan or See plans in the Add an app dialog brought you here, this part is already open.

  5. Choose monthly or yearly

Under Monthly or yearly, click Monthly or Yearly. Yearly closes the twelve months below into one bar, paid once, with the last two free.

  6. Read the receipt

The receipt lists each plan with its number of apps and the total for the period. Under each line stand the names of the apps on that plan, then the places for apps you add later, such as 1 place for a later app. Under it, Today gives what is charged to your card today and what the plan costs after that.

  7. Accept the Terms

Above the button, tick the box that starts I order for a business and accept the. It covers the Terms and the Data Processing Agreement. The box names the version, and its links open both texts in a new tab. It starts empty for every order. Pressing the button without the tick marks the box and says Tick this to continue. Moving apps that only saves, with Save, needs no tick.

  8. Pay on Stripe's page

Click Start 14-day trial for a first Watch plan, or Continue to payment. The button reads Opening, then Stripe's payment page opens. Enter your card and your billing address there. To have the invoice made out to your company, tick that you purchase as a business and add its name and VAT number. After you pay, Stripe sends you back to Billing, which says Your payment went through. The page keeps asking and names your plan as soon as Stripe confirms it. Until then there is no button to pay again. If it takes longer than a minute, the page says Stripe is taking longer than usual and keeps checking.

  9. Tear off your copy

Once Stripe has confirmed the payment, the receipt shows the plan you paid for, and Tear off your copy appears on its Today part. Drag that part down, tap or click it, or focus it and press Enter. It comes off along the perforation and settles under the receipt, stamped Paid, or Started for a trial, with the day.

  10. Change the plan

On a plan, move apps between lanes, change the places or the interval. Before you click, the receipt says what is charged today and what the plan costs after that. Click Change plan. The page shows Plan change requested. Stripe usually confirms the change within a minute, and the page shows it once it does. Then the Today part, with what was charged, is yours to tear off, stamped Paid. When apps only swap places, for example one app moves from Watch to Care and another from Care to Watch, the button reads Save, nothing is charged, and the page says Saved.

  11. Keep a plan you cancelled

While a cancellation is pending, the line under the title reads Ending and the button under the receipt reads Keep my plan. Click it. The page says the plan continues and renews as before; reload it a minute later to see Active again.

  12. Change the card or cancel

Click Manage billing at the top of the page, Update card beside the card, or Cancel plan at the foot of the page. Stripe's billing portal opens, where you update the card, cancel the plan or read past invoices. Its return link brings you back to Billing.

In the Inbox, Turn on monitoring under Getting started leads to the same page until a plan with monitoring runs. On a report of your own, See plans under a finding opens the plans on this page.

What happens behind the scenes

  • You enter your card on Stripe's page, not on Vallit. Vallit never sees the card number.
  • Before Stripe is asked, Vallit writes down which version of the Terms was accepted, when, by which account and for which order. The rows are never changed afterwards. The version also goes to Stripe with the payment or the change. Terms accepted shows the newest one; until the first order it reads With your first order.
  • Vallit keeps Stripe's reference for your company and subscription, the apps on each plan, the interval, the status, the trial end and the date the plan renews or ends. The plan of each app, Free, Watch or Care, is written down with the app.
  • Stripe is asked for Watch and Care places only. Apps on Free are not part of the subscription and never appear on an invoice.
  • Each paid app has a line of its own on Stripe's invoices and in the billing portal, named after the app with its plan and price, such as 1 × Vallit Care · shop.example.com (at €99.00 / month). Places for apps you add later share one line per plan, such as 2 × Vallit Watch. A change shows each app too: the unused part of its old line comes off, and the rest of the period is charged on its new one.
  • The lines follow your apps. Moving apps between places you already pay for, with Save, or removing an app moves their lines without charging or crediting anything. An app's line keeps the name it had on invoices already issued.
  • A plan started before app lines existed shows one line per plan, such as 2 × Vallit Care, until its next change, Save or removed app. That first change splits it into one line per app and charges nothing extra for it.
  • Stripe takes 20 lines on a payment page and 100 on a subscription. With more paid apps than that, the newest apps share their plan's line.
  • The subscription's description names which app is on which plan in words, such as example.net: Care · shop.example.com: Watch, then the places not taken yet. It leaves out apps on Free. It stays within Stripe's 500 characters by ending with "and … more" instead of cutting an app's name in half.
  • Your plan changes when Stripe confirms the payment or the change, not when you click. Until then, the page shows the plan you had. After a payment or a change, it asks again every two seconds for a minute; if Stripe takes longer, reload it.
  • The Today part tears off only after Stripe has confirmed the money, never before, and not for a Save that charges nothing. Tearing it changes nothing about your plan, and reloading the page puts it back on the receipt. A copy of a plan change shows the amount the receipt showed before you clicked; the invoice in Stripe is the exact one.
  • Clicking the button twice opens the same payment page for a day. A payment page for a different order, left open in another tab, closes when you open a new one, so two of them cannot both be paid.
  • If Vallit cannot save a confirmation from Stripe at once, Stripe sends it again until it is saved, for up to three days.
  • A change keeps your existing subscription. A change that costs more, such as more apps, Care or yearly, is invoiced and charged at once for the rest of the billing period. A change that costs less is not refunded: the unused part comes off your next invoice.
  • Switching to yearly starts a yearly period on that day. Stripe charges the year at once, with the unused part of the month taken off. Switching back to monthly starts a monthly period and leaves the unused part of the year as a credit.
  • The amount under Today comes from Stripe's own preview of the invoice, a moment after you stop changing the order. It spends any credit on your account first, for example from an earlier downgrade, and then says what is paid from your credit. Until Stripe answers, or if it cannot, the receipt shows an estimate from your billing period, less your credit, marked with "about".
  • Putting an app on Care during a Watch trial ends the trial, and Stripe charges the whole first period that day. The receipt says so before you click, with the amount charged today. Adding Watch apps during the trial charges nothing until the trial ends.
  • An app you put on Free stays there, even with a place to spare. An app you add later takes a free place, Care before Watch, and never the place of an app you put on a plan. An app added without a free place is on Free.
  • Choosing a plan while a cancellation is pending withdraws the cancellation. To keep the same plan, click Keep my plan: it withdraws the cancellation, changes nothing else and charges nothing today.
  • When a cancellation is set, in the billing portal or otherwise, the line under the title reads Ending. It gives the date the plan ends instead of the renewal date. The plan keeps everything it includes until that date. Then the five-minute watch and incident emails stop, and every app is checked once a day. Nothing already paid is refunded for the rest of the period. Your reports stay readable.
  • Once a plan has ended, the company is back on the free check, with the limits in its column. Under Your account, Apps shows the one app the free check includes and the apps in your company.
  • Without a plan, a company has room for one app. Apps beyond it stay in the company and keep their daily checks, but you cannot add another until a plan covers it. Add app then says A second app needs a paid plan first. With a plan, the company has room for the apps it pays for and 10 on Free.
  • If a payment fails, the plan shows Payment failed. Your apps stay watched while you update the card.
  • The card and Invoices come from Stripe each time the page opens. If Stripe takes longer than two and a half seconds to answer, the page shows your plan without them and says so.
  • Invoices lists your five newest invoices, each with View and PDF links. A credit from a smaller plan is listed as a credit, for example €700.00 credit, and comes off later invoices. All older invoices are in the billing portal.
