In short

  • Add the address of an app you own, or one whose owner asked you to look after it. The guardian starts watching it the moment it is added.
  • It needs an account. How many apps a company holds depends on its plan.
  • On Watch and Care, a Page health card on the app's page shows what does not work on its pages. Page health explains it.
  • Every app gets its own page: the score first, then what needs you, every check as a row of a table, how the score moved, and its trust page.

Where in the app

You add an app from Home, or from Apps in the sidebar.

Home with the Add app button beside the Apps heading (1).

Step by step

  1. Open the dialog

Click Add app on Home or under Apps in the sidebar. The Add an app dialog opens. Your first app is added right after sign-up instead, as Getting started shows.

Without a paid plan, the company has room for one app. Once it holds one, the dialog reads A second app needs a paid plan first. and offers Choose a plan. It opens Billing with Places for apps you add later unfolded. On a plan whose places are all taken, the dialog reads This company has as many apps as its plan covers. and offers See plans, which leads to the same place.

The Add an app dialog: the Address field with its fixed https:// part (2), the ownership box (3) and the Add app button (4).

  2. Enter the address

Type the address into Address, after the fixed https:// part, for example myapp.com. A tick appears at the end of the field once what you typed reads as a web address.

A name under Name (optional) is how the app appears in lists. Without one, the address is used.

  3. Confirm you may look after it

Tick I own this app, or its owner asked me to look after it. Without the tick, the dialog sends nothing. The line turns red, gives a small shake and says Tick this to continue.

  4. Add the app

Click Add app. The button reads Adding while Vallit looks the address up. The app's page opens, and each of the guardian's checks shows as due now.

The picture shows an app a few days on, with its domain confirmed and three checks behind it.

An app's page: the Run a check button (6), the band with the score (7), Needs you (8), the Reports table (9), How the score moved (10) and the Trust page card (11).
An app's page: the Run a check button (6), the band with the score (7), Needs you (8), the Reports table (9), How the score moved (10) and the Trust page card (11). On a phone.
  5. Confirm the domain

Until the domain is confirmed, Needs you starts with the row Confirm you own and the app's address. Click Confirm now. The Connect your DNS panel opens in place, and Close folds it away again. Confirm your domain walks through it.

  6. Run the first check

Click Run a check to get a full report now. The button reads Starting, then Checking, and the progress shows on the app's page. The score appears when the last check finishes.

  7. Read the band

A pill beside the app's name shows its state, such as Waiting for its domain. Beside it sit Copy report link and Run a check.

The band under the name holds four facts. Health score is the score of the latest report, worked out the way the report works it out, with how it moved since the check before. While some of its checks have not run, Partial stands in for Good. While an incident is open, the score has no colour, and the sentence under it points to the incident. Open findings counts the findings by severity; a count opens the report at the first of them. Uptime, 7 days shows the typical response under it. Guardian names the schedule and when the next check runs.

  8. See what needs you

Needs you lists what waits on you, in this order: open incidents, a check that could not run, the domain step, then Fix next. Fix next names the three worst open findings of the latest report; each opens the report at that finding. All findings opens the whole report. With nothing waiting, the list reads Nothing needs you. The guardian keeps watching.

  9. Open a report

Reports lists every check, newest first, under When, Run by, Score and Open findings. Run by reads Automatic for the guardian's daily check and Manual for one you started with Run a check. the score shows how it moved against the check before. Click a row to open its report. After eight rows, the older checks fold behind one line; click it to show them.

  10. See what runs on its own

Under Reports, the What runs on its own card names the checks the guardian runs every day (Automatic). It also names the ones that wait for you to press Run a check (Manual). The guardian shows what each group reads.

  11. See how the score moved

From three finished checks on, How the score moved draws the score over time. Point at the line to see a check's date and what it left open. Before that, the card says how many checks it still needs.

  12. Use the side column

On the right sit Trust page, Guardian and Settings; on a phone they follow the reports. Trust page shows who looked at the page and its link, and Manage opens it under Apps in the company settings. Your trust page covers it. Guardian lists the guardian's checks and its log; The guardian explains them. The Full check row reads passed only when its latest report left nothing open. Otherwise it reads ran with the worst it left open, such as ran 2 h ago · 2 critical. The Header drift row reads checked with no dot when its latest run got a refusal instead of your page.

  13. Read an exact value

With the close watch on, a line in the Guardian card draws the response time of the last 24 hours. The close watch needs the app on Watch or Care and a confirmed domain. Without it, the card reads Once a day. Every five minutes on a plan. in place of the line.

Point at the line, tap it, or move to it with the Tab key and use the arrow keys. A small bubble shows that check's time in milliseconds and when it ran.

  14. Remove an app

At the bottom of the Settings card, click Remove app. Type the app's address, then press and hold Hold to delete until it fills. Home opens without the app. Only an admin sees the button.

What happens behind the scenes

  • The field supplies https://. A scheme you type or paste in front of the address is dropped, and Vallit checks the address over https://.
  • Quotes, angle brackets or a full stop pasted with the address are dropped too.
  • Before it saves the app, Vallit looks the address up. It only accepts addresses on the public internet, so localhost or an office server is refused.
  • A company holds each address once. myapp.com and www.myapp.com count as two apps.
  • Adding the app sets up the guardian's four checks in the same step: Uptime, Certificate, Header drift and Full check. They are due at once, and the guardian looks for due checks every five minutes. The guardian explains each one.
  • The guardian's first full check gives the app its first report, without you starting it. If another check of the address ran in the last hour, that first full check is due again at the next pass. It runs once the hour is over.
  • On Watch and Care, the guardian's daily check runs the targeted checks before the domain is confirmed. Their findings keep their place and fix steps back until it is. On Free, until the domain is confirmed, the guardian's daily check leaves out the targeted checks. Its report marks them Waiting, and the What runs on its own card lists them as Manual. Run a check runs them, because you ticked the ownership box.
  • Until the close watch runs, a sentence stands where the response chart will be. The chart draws the guardian's reachability checks, so it takes the close watch to fill in.
  • The app page opens on the overview, not on a report. A report opens with no finding unfolded, unless a link points to one finding, such as a row of Fix next.
  • Each Run a check counts toward the checks your plan covers per calendar month. The guardian's daily checks do not count.
  • The Trust page card offers Publish trust page while the page is not out and you are a company admin, or says why it cannot go out yet. Your trust page covers it.
  • On Watch or Care, Connect code in the Settings card connects a repository, so the code checks can run too. Once one is connected, the card names it, with Change beside it. Fixing what we found covers it.
  • Removing an app stops its checks and deletes its monitoring results, incidents and settings. Reports that read its code are deleted, and their links stop working. Its reports of the live site lose every tie to your company and keep working under their links until they are 90 days old.
  • The app's place on your plan stays with the company, ready for the next app you add. Removing an app does not change what you pay. On Stripe's invoices its line becomes a place for a later app, on its plan's own line. Plans and billing explains how to change places.
  • A fix you only asked for is withdrawn with the app. A fix a person at Vallit is working on, or a paid one that is not done, keeps the app until it is finished.
